Why MediaTek’s New Dimensity 9000 May Not Be a Legitimate Premium Mobile Chipset After All

In Mobility, Technology News by Olivier BlanchardLeave a Comment

Futurum senior analyst Olivier Blanchard examines MediaTek’s claim that its new Dimensity 9000 mobile SOC can compete against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 in the premium tier. In addition to outlining some of the key industry hurdles facing MediaTek in its efforts to finally break into the premium tier, Blanchard outlines critical areas in which Dimensity 9000 appears to fall short of delivering premium mobile experiences for OEMs and their customers, namely modem/connectivity, camera/computer vision, AI, and mobile gaming.

5G Summit News: Qualcomm Upgrades 10 Gigabit X65 5G Modem-RF System To Facilitate Global mmWave Expansion

In Technology News by Olivier BlanchardLeave a Comment

The X65 5G Modem-RF system will now feature support for 200 MHz carrier bandwidth in the mmWave spectrum, as well as mmWave support in standalone (SA) mode. With mmWave commercial deployments currently underway around the world (over 150 global operators are already investing in these high-band frequencies), including all major operators in the U.S. and Japan, these new capabilities make sense as a next step to enable global mmWave deployments, particularly as China and other markets invested in 5G SA mode look to begin scaling their mmWave deployments.

Qualcomm’s new Fixed Wireless Access Platform to Bring mmWave 5G Performance to the Network Edge in 2022

In Technology News by Olivier BlanchardLeave a Comment

Futurum’s Olivier Blanchard takes a dive into Qualcomm’s new Fixed Wireless Access platform, which is expected to bring mmWave 5G performance to the network edge in 2022. Until now, the prevailing expectation surrounding mmWave cell deployments was that network operators would focus mostly on high density markets like urban centers, stadiums, airports, highly industrialized areas, and so on, and that therefore, suburban and rural areas would mostly miss out on ultra-fast mmWave 5G performance. Qualcomm’s introduction of its new mmWave 5G FWA CPE platform changes things. By extending mmWave 5G performance to the network edge, many suburban and rural markets that until now fell just out of reach of the best that 5G has to offer will soon have access to mmWave 5G performance just like densely populated markets.
