5G Ready for the Great Indoors? Ericsson and Swisscom Showing the Way

The Ericsson/Swisscom joint exercise indicates that 5G is ready and up to the task of solving difficult indoor coverage challenges. Ericsson’s main 5G systems rivals, Nokia and Huawei, will need to prioritize the indoor capabilities of their solutions to prevent Ericsson from gaining an upper hand through indoor coverage differentiators. Overall the increased competition here is good news for the 5G ecosystem and users.

Nokia’s Q2 2019 — 5G Demand Lifts Financial Results

Nokia is ready to further expand its presence and influence in worldwide 5G networks regardless of how the U.S.-China trade standoff is resolved. This includes factoring in potential price pressures from major 5G rival Ericsson and its signaled intention to take on greater margin pressures in order to win more 5G market share. Why? The overall 5G market is already lifting off ahead of previous 2019/H2 2019 expectations. As operators and their ecosystem partners gain valuable deployment experience, delivering 5G experiences to customers will become more automatic, expanding and diversifying 5G use cases and revenues.

DOJ Finally Approves Sprint T-Mobile Merger

The DOJ has finally approved the Sprint T-Mobile merger, setting the stage for three major US carriers, with 5G on the horizon. This, in theory, should enable Dish to effectively become the new fourth major US carrier, and fill the theoretical competition gap left by the Sprint T-Mobile merger, and allow Dish to work to build out its own 5G network.

DOJ Weighs In To Halt FTC and Koh’s Questionable Ruling Against Qualcomm

The DoJ has intervened to request a stay in the FTC ruling against Qualcomm, citing national security. This ruling against Qualcomm never made sense, and certainly did not make sense based upon what the FTC presented in its case. I feel strongly that the ruling will be paused to allow a deeper look on the security implications prior to the case being heard for appeal — it will be interesting to keep an eye on what happens next.
