The News: Juniper Networks, a provider of secure, AI-driven networks, announced the newest addition to its Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) architecture, Juniper Secure Edge. This new solution delivers Firewall-as-a-Service (FWaaS) as a single-stack software architecture, managed by Security Director Cloud, aimed at empowering organizations to secure workforces, wherever they are. Juniper Unveils Juniper Secure Edge to Up SASE Proposition
Analyst Take: Juniper is burnishing its overall security and SASE credentials with the launch of Juniper Secure Edge. For Secure Edge, Juniper is putting portfolio development and marketing emphasis on high-priority security capabilities that include unified policy management, secure user access from anywhere, dynamic Zero Trust segmentation, investment protection, identity provider integration, and third-party security validation.
I see Juniper Secure Edge playing an integral role in further boosting Juniper’s influence across the security landscape. Although Juniper’s fiscal Q4 2021 revenues were flat based on Q/Q growth, the company saw orders double on a Y/Y basis. In terms of momentum, Juniper registered double digit growth in its mid-range firewall SRX series Q/Q and Y/Y, in branch SRX Q/Q as well as in threat mitigation and applications Y/Y.
I view delivering single-stack, cloud-delivered security as a key selling point for Juniper Secure Edge. This includes brining all the security features and functionality of the SRX series to the cloud, providing application control, identity & access control, intrusion prevention, anti-malware, threat intelligence, and secure web access capabilities.
Now Juniper Secure Edge can deliver FWaaS that targets securing the remote workforce from anywhere and protect users on and off the network by delivering policies that follow the user wherever they go. I anticipate unified management, visibility, and policy capabilities underpinning FWaaS can ease organization transitioning to SASE architectures.
Key Takeaways on Juniper Secure Edge Launch
Ultimately, I expect that Juniper Secure Edge will open more channels for Juniper in fulfilling zero trust data center applications such as cloud workload protection and multi-cloud orchestration as well as edge applications such as Security-as-a-Service and “any device, any access” protection across the cloud and SASE ecosystem. As such, I see Juniper becoming increasingly short-listed for major cloud security and SASE projects and up its competitive game against key security players such as Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, and Cisco. I believe the portfolio foundation is now set for Juniper to make notable inroads throughout the cloud security and SASE segments in 2022 and beyond.
