Analyst Take: A new organization within Google Cloud will be spearheaded and led by Umesh Vemuri, a 10-year Google Cloud veteran. Reporting directly to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, Vemuri’s Global Strategic Customers and Industries group will work to forge new partnerships that connect customers to Google and Google Cloud technologies and services. The formation of this organization should bring new visibility to the cloud computing giant’s industry-driven strategy, which is a hallmark of Kurian’s leadership of Google Cloud.
The Global Strategic Customers and Industries team is being formed at a time when Google Cloud’s growth is surging, with a rapidly growing sales organization and revenues up 44% from the prior year in Q1 of 2022. Vemuri, a leader in establishing major partnerships including Ford, Sabre, Globo, Mayo Clinic, and Deutsche Bank, will continue to focus on leveraging partnerships with enterprise customers that enable them to implement services across Google’s portfolio, including Google Cloud, Ads, Maps, and Assistant.
As CEO of Google Cloud since 2019, Thomas Kurian has emphasized an industry-driven sales approach that tailors the company’s AI and cloud expertise to key verticals. The 10 key industries identified by Kurian include healthcare and life sciences, retail, financial services, media & entertainment, manufacturing and industrial, supply chain and logistics, and the public sector, among others. Vemuri’s leadership role comes with a focus on Google’s production-ready offerings specific to those industries.
Kurian’s leadership of Google Cloud has already proven highly effective, and the announcement of the Global Strategic Customers and Industries group to be led by Vemuri indicates that his industry-driven strategy remains in full force. Google is smart to prioritize the deployment of its out-of-the-box technology solutions to a broader range of enterprises at this time. Vemuri’s track record of successful partnerships that advance Google Cloud’s reputation as a leading global cloud services provider makes him a perfect fit for the role.
With industry-focused solutions seeing a significant uptick in interest and development, it is timely and prudent for Google Cloud to further commit to the promises it has made to go vertical over the past several years. With new leadership and continued growth coming from its cloud business, it looks as though Google is poised for strong industry solutions that have the potential to yield an uptick in revenue and new customer demand as it seeks to grow adoption and market share.
